2012 Relentless®

Released September 1, 2015
Suggested California retail: $85.00

“Relentless, a riveting blend of Syrah and Petite Sirah, is a groundbreaking red from Napa Valley …”
— James Laube, Wine Spectator

This was a classic Napa Valley vintage filled with warm, sunny days and perfect, chilly nights
from spring through early autumn. The consistency of heat and coolness created a model growing season in which we harvested fruit at ideal ripeness brimming with rich color and flavor.

Winemakers notes
“This is a classic Relentless offering tantalizing, vibrant aromas and flavors of Syrah meatiness and a juicy core of black plum, dark chocolate, smoke, white pepper, blackberry, and crème brulee. The mouthfeel is full and liquid-velvet smooth with a finish that lingers on and on. This vintage will offer even more riches with additional years in the cellar.”
— Shafer winemaker Elias Fernandez

This wine honors long-time Shafer Winemaker Elias Fernandez and his relentless pursuit of quality. Sourced from small ridgetop and foothills vineyards adjacent to the southern border of Stags Leap District, Relentless is a proprietary blend of Syrah and Petite Sirah.

The two grape varieties grow side by side in vineyard blocks that offer a variety of sun exposures throughout the day, including steep eastern blocks for lots of morning sun and westward sloping blocks, offering midday and late day solar exposure. Thanks to its thin, volcanic soil and quick runoff the vineyard consistently delivers effusive flavors.

At harvest the Syrah and Petite Sirah varieties are typically picked, crushed, fermented and barrel aged together, producing a wine of distinctive richness and elegance.

2012 Relentless® – Reviews

“In keeping with this amazing year, it’s full-bodied, juicy, succulent, flamboyant, with blueberry and blackberry fruit galore, lots of glycerin and a massive mouthfeel, but no heaviness or astringency characterize this stunning wine”
— Robert M. Parker, Jr., The Wine Advocate (Oct. 2014)

“A deeply structured blend that combines power with richness. Aromas of blackberry and crushed rock open to layered, complex flavors of black cherry, espresso and smoky cracked pepper. Tannins are big but fleshy.”
— Tim Fish, Wine Spectator

“A balanced beauty. Tart cranberry rubs elbows with dusty dried cherry blossom tannins. Winemaker Elias Fernandez is at his relentless best (after 30 years with the winery!) … Anise, white pepper and bitter dark chocolate form the parade at the finish.”
— Meridith May, The Tasting Panel

“It’s hard to pick just one Shafer wine, and even harder to veer from their world class Cabs, but my personal preference leans toward the Relentless label. The newest release is mostly Syrah, with about 10% Petite Sirah to round it out. It’s bold and vibrant and meaty, with expected notes of black fruits and smoke and unexpectedly low astringency. Most of all, it reflects the tenacity of winemaker Elias Fernandez’ commitment to what the land of Napa has to offer.”
— Cathy Huyghe,

“… a smooth, powerful Napa Valley syrah with some petite sirah included. It’s a rich choice to go with red meat and aged cheeses.”
— Peter M. Gianotti, Newsday
