Shafer Vineyards, working with fellow vintners, helped to raise more than $200,000 at the 25th anniversary Auction Napa Valley, held June 3 - 5, 2005. The overall amount raised during the weekend totaled more than $10.5 million, which will benefit Napa County nonprofit agencies involved in health care, youth development and affordable housing.
For one of 57 “mega-lots” sold during the live auction on Saturday evening, Shafer joined with neighboring wineries Lewis Cellars and Darioush to create a one-day fantasy getaway that sold at the live auction for $145,000. Tonight Show Host Jay Leno got into the act and helped inspire the bidding with a series of jokes and good-natured hectoring.
The lot called, “The Ultimate LSD Experience” (for Lewis, Shafer, Darioush) offered four couples a morning of driving Formula One racecars at Infineon Raceway (formerly Sears Point) with former racecar driver Randy Lewis. Participants will cool their engines with Shafer at a gourmet vineyard picnic in its Red Shoulder Ranch vineyard. The day ends at Darioush winery with a Persian feast for the senses at its spectacular new winery.
Earlier in the weekend, Shafer took a top spot in the barrel auction. Its ten-case lot of 2003 Hillside Select sold for a total of $62,050.
Shafer was recently honored by the Napa Valley Vintners as one of just twenty wineries that have participated in Auction Napa Valley since its inception in 1981. In 25 years, the auction has helped raise $62 million for local charities.
