SHAFER VINEYARDS DONATES A PERCENTAGE OF SEPTEMBER 2005 SALES TO BENEFIT ‘IF GIVEN A CHANCE’ SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

Winery’s $25,000 donation is matched dollar-for-dollar by The Headlands Foundation

Napa Valley, October 2005 – Shafer Vineyards has donated $25,000, a percentage of the winery’s tasting room sales for September, to benefit the lives of Napa County youth through the Napa-based college scholarship program, “If Given a Chance.”

The winery’s funds have been matched by The Headlands Foundation of San Rafael, bringing the total donation to $50,000.

“This scholarship program recognizes special youth who’ve overcome tremendous obstacles such as gang affiliation, addiction, injury and disease,” says Jim King, director, If Given a Chance. “Some of these obstacles were of their own making but often they were victims, but courageous ones. More than 67 percent of our recipients have been abused.”

If Given a Chance awards recipients $2,500 a year to attend college. Each recipient is first nominated by an adult and the nominee writes his or her story, which is reviewed by a committee of volunteers that includes the chief of police for Napa, the chief probation officer and local educators. Students may continue to apply for scholarships throughout their college career, including graduate school.

The program awards an average of $90,000 a year.

“The great joy of participating with this program is that If Given a Chance gives young people who want a fresh start a real opportunity,” says John Shafer, noting that past recipients, who may have spent time in juvenile hall, have gone on to get Masters and Ph.D. degrees at top schools including UCLA, UC Davis, and Stanford University.

“We are pleased that Headlands Foundation so readily agreed to join us in this endeavor,” says Shafer.

The Headlands Foundation is a tax-exempt organization created to support non-profit groups working with families and children in the Bay Area and beyond. Since its inception in 1995, The Headlands Foundation has donated more than $2.5 million to many worthwhile programs.

Shafer Vineyards is managed by the father and son team of John and Doug Shafer. The Shafer family owns and farms 200 acres of vineyards, sources for Shafer’s Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Sangiovese, and Syrah. This year Shafer Vineyards celebrates 25 years of winemaking. For more information, please visit: www.shafervineyards.com.

The Headlands Foundation was established by Peter T. Paul, the former owner and CEO of Headlands Mortgage Company. Paul’s current enterprise, Paul Financial, LLC, is a niche residential wholesale lender with offices in California, Arizona and Nevada. Paul is also the owner of Grove Street Winery, located in Healdsburg, California, a premium winery that produces 15,000 cases a year of award-winning Chardonnay, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.
